SATIRE? WHAT'S THAT?
Yesterday before we were all dismissed from class, we were told to write a blog post regarding what satire means and to provide two local examples of satire, also we will need to explain why satire needed much in Malaysia, at this time?
I strongly believe that most of us will be like scratching our head wondering what satire is and how are we supposed to write a blog post. Which of course happens to me myself most of the time after reading the definition of satire, it actually makes me confused about what satire means. Anyway, I've decided to give it a shot, there isn't any options left after all.
So as I have went through Google to find out the definition of satire, it means the use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people's stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues. To elaborate it from the definition given and based on my personal understanding, it is an act to embarrass an individual, corporations, governments etc which the act relevant to performing arts. On the other hand, satire is a way of making us realise how silly or bad things are and those are the stupidity of people that makes us laughing at them. The first local example of satire is the one that first crossed my mind after reading the definition of satire, Fahmi Reza who is known as one of the Malaysian graphic artist.
Fahmi Reza was charged a section of Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Law. However, he was pleaded not guilty.
As for the following example, I can't exactly remember what is the name of the artist but as far as I remember, the artist is famous for his work where he photoshopped himself in the pictures along with the government, prime ministers, etc. To make it clearer for my lecturers in understanding which artist I'm actually referring, it is the artist who photoshopped himself sitting along with Najib back then when Najib was younger. I have tried finding for the picture via online Google and few more social platforms but I failed to find probably it would be easier if I remember or write down the name of the artist. However, this is the least I remember from last week's lecture regarding a few artworks from some famous local artists.
Moving on next, if I'm not mistaken it is a question asked to explain why satire needed much in Malaysia at this time. In my opinion, satire is much needed in Malaysia at this time probably because to voice out on behalf of citizens by using arts. As we should know, no matter how good a government is, there will be a bunch or maybe a few groups of people who will never be satisfy with the government. "Apatah lagi" in Malaysia where the government has been causing lots of nightmares among the citizens, dirty elections and started this GST thingy yet Malaysia is still not improving. And to me, instead of looking the artworks by the artists as only like a criticism towards the government, it has also creativity in Malaysians where they are able to create artworks which contains various kind of messages to the audience itself. To me, satire is much needed in Malaysia at this time is to literally brings out hidden message to the audience without putting them behind the bar as an artwork can actually brings out more than just a specific message.
I hope I did not run out of the topic, but if I do, I will surely re-write a blog post based on my understanding after being explain by my lecturer.
