BLOG POST - WEEK 1

What did I learn about "the arts" from the first lecture and what are the short and long term benefits of learning to appreciate the arts? Do I personally think it is important for ALL students to learn about Malaysian arts at UTAR? Why or why not?

This question will be weird for me if I was happened to skip the first lecture but surprisingly I was there and it was indeed a brand new experience to me probably because previously I did not pay much attention or the way of Dr Carmen teaching has just improved throughout these two years. Perhaps, improve isn't a suitable word, just that Dr Carmen manage to explore the way to teach the students and understanding arts or the subject in a fun yet interesting way. Well based on my understanding from what I have learnt about "the arts" from the first lecture, first thing first, arts and art is totally different and to be honest with you, the different between them is that one is plural and the other one is singular which I guess that's all I remember and if I'm not mistaken, arts is consists of most of the things which is like the big brother of all categories such as photography, stage play, dramas, films, musics, etc.

Moving on, the short term benefits of learning to appreciate the arts is that we as the younger generation might neglect or probably does not acknowledge about what the artists are doing in sending out a message by using arts. As for me, I feel that people who are having the long term in learning to appreciate the arts are mostly knowledgable and they are more explore to how the reality and what kind of changes has been made throughout the years. What I just said might be confusing but that's part of my opinion based on my observation as I have a few friends who are very into arts and cultural, they tend to know more about the history and other religion or races' cultures which leads me to this high and low context culture which has been taught during the first lecture. As for me myself, I would consider myself categorised in the high context culture where I know that what should and shouldn't be done without knowing what's the reason behind all these dos and don'ts. Hence, I personally think that it is important for ALL students to learn about Malaysian arts, not only in UTAR but it's the best if it applies to all. Even though I used to have this thoughts where history and the arts drew by some artists are most likely a waste of time for students, honestly, I find it very interesting especially when Dr Carmen started to show us a few painting by the artists. Here are the few paintings or drawings by some famous artists. I probably feel interested in the drawing maybe because I'm a big fan of war movies.

As for this picture below, I'm very surprised that I wasn't brought up by my parents in a right way because I have never been told about a Kadazandusun creation story in which woman creates the earth and the paddy.

So basically, it is actually interesting and important to have students study and exploring more into Malaysian arts but of course, the name of the subject has already freak out the students but it is always the lecturer or teacher who should be playing the important role in turning this subject from boring (students' first thoughts) into interesting. Perhaps, this subject should focus more on field trip, filming it and editing own version video by writing our own scripts which helps a lot more in understanding and memorising automatically rather than just memorising it for the sake of examination. That's all from me for my first blog post. Thank you for reading.

  1. Dom, I think that bit about how "art" and "arts" are singular and plural was a joke! LOL!! You are not supposed to remember that! But yes, you are right that the arts is the umbrella group and ART is underneath that larger umbrella of the artS.

I like how you use your friends as examples of people who know more about history and culture because they are more interested in the arts. But can you elaborate or explain further as to WHY you think by being interested in the arts, you also end up knowing more about history and culture? Is there some natural connection between the 2 things?

And my writing tip for you for this first post:
Write shorter paragraphs. Try to stick to ONE MAIN idea per paragraph and explore that idea fully before moving on to the next idea, in a DIFFERENT paragraph. That way, your ideas will flow better from paragraph to paragraph instead of having many ideas in one big chunk.

Thank you for your suggestion at the end. Will definitely focus more on hands-on work in MMC as it will be 50% of coursework anyway. Thank you for writing!!

  2. Thank you for the advises and I realised my weakness too which is in elaborating the ideas and moving the idea to the different paragraphs which affects the flow of the whole blog - might causes confusion to the readers as well, I will try to improve. Thanks Dr Carmen.
